Sunday May 10th
Sites Visited: Meteora (Natural grandeur, Monasteries)
Where did we stay tonight?: Thessaloniki
Leaders: Charles Clark and Chris Johnson
Today, we were treated to a truly fantastic landscape. The monasteries at Meteora were built beginning in the 14th century upon giant pillars of rock that rise out of the Thessalian plain. In the morning, we were driven to the highest and largest of the monasteries and allowed to roam at our leisure, meandering along the cliffs to visit the other sites as we descended. The monasteries’ interiors were lavished with Byzantine wall paintings and displays of manuscripts and relics, which we perused throughout the morning. In the afternoon, we set off by bus for Thessaloniki, where our next few adventures in northern Greece are headquartered.
We on the FSP wish a very happy Mother’s Day to all of our respective mother figures.
