Week 9

Week 9

Sunday May 17th

Sites Visited: Dion (Macedonian sanctuary)

Where did we stay tonight?: Athens

Leaders: KT Holroyd and Joe Indvik

Today was the last day of our lengthy trip to Northern Greece with Professor Christesen. Now is a time for reflection. We ate many gyros, saw many sites, swam, lost one to the depths of illness, gained him back, saw some snakes, quarried some marble, consulted a few oracles, ran a race, and had a lot of fun (and learned a thing or two). Although the trip was perhaps not of Homeric magnitude, it was epic nonetheless.

Today, we left our charming hotel of Thessaloniki, sadly saying goodbye to the red light district—farewell sex shops, strip joints, and mannequin stores. After a short bus ride we arrived at Dion, the Macedonian sanctuary and Roman town. The site, aptly named an “archaeological park” was a sprawling overgrown (potentially Malaria ridden?) swamp with a variety of fauna in addition to the ruins. We wandered around the extensive site with nothing but an outdated map and the brilliant intuition of our professor. After getting our fill of the site, we ate a quick lunch and boarded the bus for our long Odyssean-like journey back home (Athens). While some played cards, some slept, some watched “Step up 2 the Streets” “Sin City” “Troy” or “Gladiator” others chose merely to admire the beautiful landscapes of Greece. After five hours, we finally returned to the comforts of the Astor hotel in Athens. Tomorrow is a much needed free day, followed by a trip to Istanbul, see you on the other side of the Aegean!
