Week 10

Thursday May 28th

Sites Visited: Ephesus (Hellenistic/Roman city)

Where did we stay tonight?: Pythagoreio on Samos

Leaders: Jerry Guo and Ben Kahn

Striking back against the Turkokratia:

Today marked our return to the land of the Turks and our attempt to take vengeance from the dastardly Turks for their control over beautiful Hellas for so long. Okay so we didn’t do that, but we did do some other interesting things today.

It was an early morning for us! The island lifestyle is not agreeable to such an early rise, but we all powered through with the assistance of filter coffee and delicious toast. A short walk down to the bus station began many hours in transit – we took a bus to Samos town, a ferry to a port in Turkey, and then another bus to the site of Ephesus. We were met by a chipper tour guide who took us on a four-hour walking tour of the site. The blazing hot sun reflecting off all the marble drove some mad. Highlights were the massive terrace insulae (Roman housing blocks) and the Library of Celsus.

After Ephesus, we journeyed back to Greece (once again taking a bus to ferry to bus) and began work on an assignment on the site. Many enjoyed the Burger King that was conveniently placed at the ferry port. Burger King is definitely not found in Greece; the King is a wanted man. The evening was spent working! With two assignments due tomorrow, we were in for fun times.

But thankfully, we have most of the day off tomorrow! The word jet-ski has been thrown around, which should be a soothing balm to assuage the burning sensation of leaving this island paradise.
